Apple’s Tactics: Pack Headset with Features and Hope for the Best
Apple has taken a unique approach in the development and presentation of its new AR/VR headset. Rather than focusing on one or even a few key features, the company has decided to throw in everything but the kitchen sink in hopes that consumers will find enough features that they like to justify the hefty price tag. The headset, which is set to be unveiled in June, will have a wide range of capabilities, including mixed reality apps for iPad, a wellness app, virtual sports, a gaming focus, videoconferencing, and more.
Apple’s New Reality Headset Packs a Punch
The Reality Pro or Reality One headset (according to trademark filings) will have an impressive range of capabilities, including the ability to run most of Apple’s existing iPad apps in mixed reality, a new wellness app focused on meditation, the ability to run hundreds of thousands of existing third-party iPad apps, a virtual reality-focused fitness experience, and much more. The headset will be powered by a new mixed-reality operating system called xrOS, and developers will be encouraged to create new apps and services using the software development kit and a Mac-based headset simulator.
Charging the Headset: A New Proprietary Connection
The headset has an unusual feature where its battery is placed outside of the device and kept in the user's pocket and is connected to the headset via cable. To prevent the connector from falling out during use, the cable has a round tip that inserts magnetically and is then rotated clockwise to lock it in place. The headset also has a USB-C connector for data and a new proprietary charger, and the battery pack is approximately the size of an iPhone.
Apple Card Savings Account Launches
Apple has launched its long-awaited savings account, which offers an impressive interest rate of 4.15%, higher than most traditional banks’ annual percentage yield for savings. However, the offering is only available in the US and requires an Apple Card. While notable, the Apple Card savings account is just the beginning of the company’s financial ambitions.
Apple’s First Stores in India
Apple has opened its first stores in India, which is seen more as a symbolic move to show the company’s commitment to the country as a sales and manufacturing hub. The stores, one in Mumbai and one in New Delhi won’t add much revenue by themselves but are a sign that Apple believes in the potential of the Indian market.
Wahaaa
Apple is gearing up to release its highly anticipated Reality headset and is taking a scattershot approach to its features in the hopes of appealing to a wide range of consumers. The headset will feature a variety of options, such as games, fitness services, and even an app for reading books in virtual reality. Apple is hoping that this approach will lead buyers to find something they like. The new headset from Apple will have many exciting features such as being able to use iPad apps in mixed reality, watch sports in virtual reality, and use it as a monitor for a connected Mac computer. The device will also include a new proprietary charging connector and a new VR-focused Fitness+ experience for working out while wearing the headset. At Developers Conference, Apple will introduce the software development kit and Mac-based headset simulator for the new headset. They will encourage developers to create apps and services for the new mixed-reality operating system called xrOS.
